'I Have a Dream' - Martin Luther King Jr.
Reflection:
- Resource: A video found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V57lotnKGF8. It shows live footage of Martin Luther King Jr. making his famous speech 'I Have a Dream'.
- Teaching Activities/Ideas: This video gives children the chance to experience this influential speech about human rights visually and aurally. It allows children to place the speech in context and realise its importance. This is achieved by witnessing the cheers and crowds of people supporting Martin Luther King Jr. The children may watch the video once, the teacher may then give three key questions to the class and they must record the answers from a second watching. They may report answers back to the class. The children may describe and explore the area in which the speech takes places: 'Why at Lincoln's memorial statue? Why do you think? The children may take turns in pairs describing the event from the perspective of the speaker himself and of a supporter in the crowd. Children may make a list of the dreams which Martin Luther refers to in his speech. They may compare these dreams to dreams of their own (Skills of a historian). Adult supervision is needed when accessing YouTube. These are again suggestions of teaching activities and ideas. There are many other ways of using these resources.
- Curricular Linkage: English (Oral Language and Writing), Drama (story), Geography (a sense of place) and SPHE (human rights)
