Reflection:
- Resources: The fun facts about the Beatles were sourced at: http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/50-essential-beatles-facts-564793/4. The website: http://dublinbeatlesfestival.com/ is based on the Beatles arrival and performance in Dublin fifty years ago
- Teaching Activities and Ideas: This lesson may begin with a discussion between teacher and children about who their favourite singer/band/performer is and why. The discussion will put the lesson and resource in context as children will understand that how they feel about their favourite performer is how people in the past felt about The Beatles arriving in Dublin. The fun facts may then be presented to the children to show them what differences The Beatles made in music. Questioning and prompting may lead to a rich and stimulating discussion based on the comparison of music then and now. The Beatles website may then be explored by teacher and children. Many areas of the band and their arrival in Dublin may be examined with use of this interactive and multi-sensory website e.g. clothes, archives, reports, stories, photographs. This site must be used with adult supervision. Adults including teachers must visit and examine the website firstly, reading articles and watching videos to ensure they are age appropriate. The children may be invited to go home and ask their parents if they remember the arrival of The Beatles and if they were/are a band that they like. Children may then share these stories the following day. (Change and continuity, Oral Language). These are again suggestions of teaching activities and ideas. There are many other ways of using these resources.
- Curricular Linkage: Music (song singing, composing and performing), Drama (story), History (change over time), Geography (area and skills), Visual Arts (rod puppets), SPHE (likes and dislikes) and English (Oral language and Reading).
Reflection:
- Resource: Video of the Beatles performing 'Love Me Do' which can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbt8oH5Lxto.
- Teaching Activities and Ideas: This video may be played before or after the exploration of The Beatles website. This video gives children the opportunity to see The Beatles perform in a multi-sensory way. Children may infer what sounds are coming from which instruments, discuss how the video is made in black and white, comment on the singing drummer, compare this music video with music videos of today and hypothesise why The Beatles were and are still such a famous and successful band. (Change and Continuity). Children may again share stories of their own experience of The Beatles' music or their parents/relations etc. (Oral Language). This video may then be used for song singing in music where the children will learn to sing 'Love Me Do' by The Beatles, perform it and perhaps record it. (Music Strands). Care must always be taken when accessing YouTube. These are again suggestions of teaching activities and ideas. There are many other ways of using these resources.
