Reflection:
- Resources: These resources are the National Library of Ireland website which shows the exhibition that was on show here based on the Dublin Lockout 1913. The photo accompanying the website is found on the site: www.nli.ie/lockout/. The two pictures are of two important figures that have/will be discussed and explored throughout the history lessons. (Images sourced at www.googleimages.ie)
- Teaching Activities and Ideas: I would use the website after covering background information based on The Dublin Lockout 1913, Rosie Hackett and Jim Larkin. The website would be used as a resource to support learning that has been covered but give opportunities to explore the topic in a very interactive and multi-sensory way. Each heading on the website could be examined during individual lessons to provide time to interact with the topic at a beneficial level. Children would illustrate their own map of Dublin today and compare it with the map on the website during the Lockout 1913, watch videos and act as reporters notating information given. They could also empathise with people who are interviewed, compare different perspectives and describe how they would feel if they were in this situation (skills of a historian). I would advise adult supervision at all times when exploring this website as there are hints of graphic details in relation to the historical event. These are again suggestions of teaching activities and ideas. There are many other ways of using these resources.
- Curricular Linkage: English (Reading, Writing and Oral Language), Geography (sense of place and skills - mapping), Drama (fictional lens - story, Visual Arts (rod puppets) and SPHE (rights of workers)
